National Symphony pays homage to Nicolas Chumachenco

By Pablo Bardin
For the Herald
My reminiscences of violinists Ana and Nicolas Chumachenco go back to 1961 when they were 16 or 17, and I was bowled over by their virtuosity and intense musical sensitivity. Although of Russian parents, they were born in Poland in 1944, a terrible time, and somehow the family managed to emigrate to our city of Tucumán in 1946, where the natural gifts of sister and brother developed (it was then a very musical city).
His teachers were spectacular: Ljerko Spiller in Buenos Aires, Jascha Heifetz in California, Efrem Zimbalist in Philadelphia. A member of the Zürich Quartet and soloist with the Zürich Chamber Orchestra, a professor at Freiburg for over 30 years, he has been for the last 20 seasons a director and soloist of the Madrid Reina Sofía Chamber Orchestra. A distinguished trajectory indeed; Nicolás Chumachenco has visited us from time to time, and last year he gave a splendid chamber concert with local musicians at our Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo (reviewed previously in the Herald).
He played Beethoven’s Concerto with magisterial aplomb and refined style, well abetted by the orchestra conducted by young Mariano Chiacchiarini, an Argentine who is having a very positive European career but has also been a guest of the NS since 2013. And the violinist also added a beautiful performance of Kreisler’s Recitative and Scherzo-Caprice.
The orchestra also played two Ravel standards, the final piece of the suite Ma Mère l’Oye (why not the whole suite?) and the Second Suite from Daphnis and Chloë) plus the première of Tres sueños lúcidos (“Three lucid dreams”), SADAIC Prize 2013, by the young composer Alex Nante: an attractive and sensitive tableaux of evocative power and fine technique. Chiacchiarini showed his talent in cleanly etched performances. Of course, the venue was the Blue Whale.                                 w
