Oviedo celebrates 30th anniversary

By Sorrel Moseley-Williams

Oviedo has a claim to be the most successful fine dining restaurant in Buenos Aires, if not Argentina. The brainchild of Emilio Garip, this emblematic seafood establishment has just turned 30 — and what stories those four walls could probably tell!

Buenos Aires’ culinary greats spanning various generations including Dolli Irigoyen, Donato De Santis (Cucina Paradiso), Gonzalo Aramburu (Aramburu, Bis) and Pablo Rivero (Don Julio) wished Garip, his wife Cristina and chef Ramón Chiliguay well at Oviedo’s 30th birthday party last week.

Besides an outstanding contemporary menu — the octopus and prawn risotto is a must — Oviedo also houses a phenomenal wine cellar filled with vertical collections Garip has lovingly collected over the past three decades which easily surely rival any Argentine bodega’s. And, given that son Sebastián qualified as a sommelier, Oviedo’s next 30 years are certainly in capable hands.
