Gov’t seeks to maintain warrants

President Mauricio Macri’s new administration has made it clear that it has every intention of maintaining international arrest warrants against three Iranian suspects of the 1994 AMIA Jewish community centre.

In July of this year Interpol requested re-confirmation that the motives for Argentina’s request for Red Notices against Ahmad Reza Ashgari, Mohsen Rabbani and Ali Fallahijan are still applicable. Federal Judge Rodolfo Canicoba Corral had requested the Red Notices following a brief by late AMIA special prosecutor Alberto Nisman in 2006 and they must be reviewed by the independent Commission for the Control of Interpol’s Files (CCF) as they are about to hit the 10-year mark.

The administration headed by former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Canicoba Corral answered that those warrants remained valid and brand-new Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich have told the CCF “the Argentine government is firmly determined to keep in effect the international arrest warrants requested by the Argentine courts as part of the AMIA investigation.”

The Security and Foreign ministries also reiterated that they have asked the CCF if if requires any more information before it makes it recommendations to the Interpol’s secretary-general.

In August of this year Canicoba Corral said that Interpol must “increase its resources and efforts to find out the real whereabouts of the accused and capture them.”

This week, Macri’s government reversed the previous administration’s efforts at judicial cooperation with Iran over the attacks as it withdrew an appeal against a court ruling that the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Tehran that ruled the deal was unconstitutional.

Macri and sectors of the Jewish community such as the DAIA and AMIA had advocated for the repeal of the MOU when it was signed.
