Martínez's trainer asks him to quit boxing

Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico (R) lands a right punch to the face of Sergio Martinez of Argentina during the first round as they battle for the WBC Middleweight Championship.

Pablo Sarmiento, Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez trainer admitted asking him to quit boxing after last night’s defeat against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

“I hope this was his last fight. I am going to talk to him, he should listen,” Sarmiento said. The trainer was responsible for stopping the fight at Madison Square Garden in New York, at the begining of the 10th round.

“He has nothing else to prove, he is a champeon,” Sarmiento said about the 39 year-old boxer who showed the effects of recent shoulder and knee operations.

Martínez did neither confirm nor reject his trainer’s suggestion. “Now comes a time to rest and think,” he twitted after the fight and congratulated rival Miguel Cotto.
