Internationally acclaimed pianist Minsoo Sohn, First Laureate of 2006 Canada’s Honens International Piano Competition, will make his Argentine debut tomorrow, at the Colón Theatre, with a recital featuring Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel (Op. 24). The concert is included in the Variations programme organized by Festivales Musicales, and will be presented with the support of the Cultural Centre of the Embassy of Korea.

Minsoo Sohn’s Goldberg Variations are likely to delight the Argentine audience, as the Korean artist’s recording of Bach’s masterpiece was named one of the top 25 records of 2011 by The New York Times, whose Vivien Schweitzer praised the musician’s “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation.” Furthermore, live performances of his interpretation of the Goldberg Variations have been broadcast, to high acclaim, numerous times on CBS and NPR.

Sohn was born in Korea but moved to Boston as a teenager to study with Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory, where he graduated with the most prestigious degree, Artist Diploma, in 2004. He often said that one of his early inspirations was Henryk Szeryng’s legendary recording of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. In recent interviews, he confessed his first love was, in fact, the violin, but later on he became fascinated with the piano. “I just wasn’t sure I would be a musician,” he said in an interview. “I had interests in many fields and stopped playing. I even dreamed of being an athlete.”
