Pope Francis breaks a new record on Twitter
Pope Francis' official Twitter account, available in nine languages, broke a new record with 13 millionfollowers.
A total of 13,005,370 users follow Francis in Twitter. The Spanish @pontifex_es has the record of 5.415.627 followers, and next in the ranking is the English account (@pontifex) with 3,914,594 followers.
The numbers show that Pope Francis is still one of the most popular figures in the microblogging world.
Although the account belongs to the Argentinean pope, it was created in December 2012 by his predecessor Benedict XVI. By the time of Benedict's resignation, on February, the number of followers was near three millions.
Closed during the Vatican's "vacant seat" (the period between Benedict's resignation and the election of a new pontiff), the account was then reopened on March 17, after Francis assumption.
