Bachelet proposes expropriations, announces housing plan for Valparaíso
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has announced today a housing plan to rebuild Valparaíso after a fire devastated parts of the port city, destroying over 3,000 houses and killing at least 12 people.
The plan “could include expropriating rural areas surrounding the city to set counter-fires” in order to continue battling the blaze, the President told reporters.
“Government will immediately start with the construction of houses and the reconditioning of local hostels to shelter the victims,” Bachelet said.
“This is a tremendous tragedy, but also a chance to rebuild the city in an orderly fashion,” she added.
