Clarín Group’s Channel 13 marginalized

Out of all the networks, Telefé, Channel 9 see biggest increases

Telefé and Channel 9 were the two broadcast TV channels that most benefited from last year’s government advertising scheme, according to official reports from the Chief-of-Staff’s Office published yesterday.

Telefónica Group’s Telefé received 31,459,087 pesos from the federal administration during the first six months of 2013, some 111 percent more than the previous year, while Channel 9 — owned by Remigio Ángel González González — received 50,233,349 pesos, more than double than during the first part of 2012.

The other side of the coin is Clarín Group’s Channel 13, which two years ago was receiving just 2,305,887 pesos and, at a first glance, was directly absent from 2013’s report.

Its absence may mean that Channel 13 did not receive a single peso in government advertising from January to June 2013, an event that possibly prompted a Supreme Court’s decision last month that ordered the CFK administration to restore advertising to the media outlet, Martín Becerra, a professor at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) told the Herald.

América TV received 28,240,328 pesos in government advertising, 51.7 percent more than in 2012.

State-owned Channel 7 received only 855,408 pesos (19.9 percent less than during the first six months of 2012), but it must be noted that the government’s classification does not include production companies, many of which receive official advertising.

In the case of Channel 7, these companies may include La Corte — which produces the soccer programme Fútbol Para Todos, and PPT, owned by Diego Gvirtz responsible for the pro-government TV show, 6, 7, 8.
