Reds suffer shocking defeat
Independiente loses 3-1 at home against Atlético Tucumán
Another disappointing performance finished in a 3-1 home loss against Atlético Tucumán for Independiente, which cut a run of 13 games without defeat and failed again to show the type of play its had during the last part of the first round of the tournament.
Independiente suffered a shocking 3-1 home defeat against Atlético Tucumán yesterday in a match for the 25th round of the National B Division tournament.
The host played without its striker Facundo Parra, who suffered an injury last week in the team’s 0-0 draw with Aldosivi and will be out for at least three weeks. Paraguayan Adrián Fernández took his place in the first team and had a clear chance to put the host ahead in the 32nd minute, when he received a pass from Matías Pisano, but his shot went close to the goal defended by Cristian Lucchetti.
A minute later, Atlético Tucumán took advantage of Independiente’s defensive mistakes and Gonzalo Bazán sent the ball home to shock the packed Libertadores de América stadium. The left midfielder found himself unmarked inside the box and scored with a fierce shot.
Omar de Fellipe’s team entered to the field in the second half with forward Martín Benítez among the players. The 19-year-old replaced Martín Zapata to intensify the attack, but the team and the fans were hardly hit with a fantastic goal from 44 metres by Luis “La Pulga” (the flea) Rodríguez.
Atlético Tucumán played a more defensive style after its second goal and Independiente sent almost all its men in attack. Substitute Sebastián Penco, who replaced Federico Insúa, pulled one back in the 70th minute with a header after a cross by Gabriel Vallés.
However, Rodríguez commanded a counter-attack in the 87th and passed the ball to Uruguayan Víctor Píriz Álvez, who unmarked sent the ball home to seal the victory for the visitors.
It was the first defeat for Independiente in 13 matches and the second since De Felippe took charge of the team in the fifth round.
Tournament leader Banfield suffered a 1-0 defeat yesterday against Gimnasia y Esgrima (Jujuy). It was the second straight loss for Matías Almeyda’s team. Second-placed Defensa y Justicia defeated Aldosivi 3-0.
Banfield leads the standings with 50 points, followed by Defensa y Justicia with 48 and Independiente with 43.
