Sales of Pope Francis books booming in Argentina

Pope Francis books lead sales
The appointment of Buenos Aires’ former cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as leader of the Vatican has revolutionized the publishing industry in Argentina. Plenty of authors have been making use of pope Francis’ image and this has clearly been seen in the vast and overwhelming selection of books which now fills the shelves of Argentine bookshops.
Since March 13 — when the first Latin American Pope was named personality of the year by Time magazine — many different types of books have been published, from biographies and children’s books to interviews and tales of his passion for soccer.
Sergio Rubin and Francesca Ambrogetti’s 2010 book, El jesuita: Conversaciones con el cardenal Jorge Bergoglio, was re-released with a different tittle: El Jesuita. La historia de Francisco, el papa argentino (Vergara). In the book, both writers report on their meetings over a two-year period with the former cardinal. The book was a great success, its copyright was sold to 15 countries and it will be translated into Polish, Lithuanian, Estonian, Italian, Portuguese, French and English, among other languages.
Another peak in sales came with Francisco. Vida y revolución (El Ateneo) by the Argentine journalist and Vatican expert Elisabetta Piqué. This work consists of different revealing testimonies, anecdotes and unpublished information about Bergoglio.
Piqué had a close relationship for more than a decade with the current pope. She was the only journalist in the world that on the date of the new pope’s appointment had written of Bergoglio’s chance to lead the Vatican, although the Argentine man was not on the list of favourites.
In a country with a long  tradition of soccer, this topic could not be left alone. Journalist Pablo Calvo — a fan of San Lorenzo soccer club, as well as Bergoglio — published Dios es cuervo. La sagrada historia de San Lorenzo de Almagro (Sudamericana). In the book, the author explains the history, the victories and failures of the pontiff’s favourite club.
Nuestra fe es revolucionaria (Planeta) is a well-researched book by journalist Virginia Bonard, which brings out Bergoglio’s feelings and thoughts and emphasizes his closeness to the people.
Rabbi and politician Sergio Bergman wrote Un evangelio según Francisco. Maestro, líder y estadista (Ediciones B) and Evangelina Himitián also published Francisco, el Papa de la gente (Aguilar).
Sobre el cielo y la tierra (Sudamericana) is a book written by Pope Francis himself and Rabbi Abraham Skorka years ago. The work comes from a series of conversations between the religious leaders about theology, fundamentalism, death, the holocaust, homosexuality and capitalism, among others.
Other products include the children’s book, Francisco, nues-tro Papa (Planeta Juniors) by Sandra Donin and Gustavo Damiani, Francisco, el Papa del pueblo by Mariano de Vedia (Planeta), Papa Francisco. Su vida y sus desafíos by Saverio Gaeta (San Pablo), Francisco, la esperanza del nuevo mundo (Arguval) by Francisco García, Francisco, los jesuitas y los pecados de la Iglesia (RobinBook) by Jorge Blaschke, Papa Francisco. Cómo piensa en nuevo Pontífice (LibrosLibres), Recen por él, by Marcelo Larraquy (Sudamericana) and Biblia. Diálogo vigente. La fe en tiempos modernos by Planeta — a transcription of the televised meetings held between Bergoglio, Skorka and Bible expert Marcelo Figueroa.
