Mercedes-Benz introduces the GL
Mercedes-Benz has introduced its largest SUV on the Argentine market: the GL. In its only version, the GL 500 4Matic Automatic Sport comes with a V8 435HP, full equipment for comfort and safety and seating for seven occupants including the driver.
This is the tenth launch out of the 12 models that Mercedes-Benz Argentina CEO Roland Zey announced in April would arrive in the country. (CLS, ML, GLK, Clase A, E-Class Sedan, E-Class Coupe, CLA, S-Class and the GL; and for the AMG brand: SLK 55 AMG, E63 AMG, and the CLS63 AMG.)
The GL is the German automaker’s SUV for the large segment. It has a length of 5.12 metres, width of 1.93 metres and height of 1.85 metres, along with a generous 3.07 metre wheelbase.
A 680-litre trunk means plenty of space to transport items. The car has three rows of seats, and the third is accessed via an electronically adjustable system. The tank has a 100-litre capacity.
This is the second generation of the GL, the first of which was never sold in our country. Imported from the US factory at Tuscaloosa, the GL comes with the AMG sports package across the range, 21-inch tyres, a panoramic sunroof, an automatic tailgate, leather upholstering, an automatic parking system, a Harman-Kardon sound system, an entertainment system for passenger seats and nine airbags (including knee-level and rear lateral ones for the driver).
Prices start at US$169,900, and the vehicle comes with a two-year guarantee.
Mechanically, the GL’s V8 petrol engine has direct injection, 4.7 litre cylinders, a variable admission system, 32 valves turbo and an intercooler.
Its 435 HP revolve at 5,250rpm, while its torque is of 70.7kgm between 1,800 and 3,500rpm.
Moreover, to reduce consumption rates, the GL automatically turns off when the vehicle comes to a halt and automatically turns on when the acceleration is triggered.
The 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission offers the option to manually change gears with levers on the steering wheel. Traction is controlled by the 4Matic integral system with automatic distribution throughout the wheelbase.
The On & Off Road package, with six driving setting programmes, features a reduction gearbox, total-differentials locking in the front, centre and rear and greater protection to the underside of the vehicle, along with a special stability control configuration, traction system, air suspension and ABS.
