Boca Juniors wins Copa Argentina against Racing Club

Boca''s Rolando Schiavi celebrates with the cup in his hands with the rest of the team.

Boca Juniors won the Copa Argentina at the Bicentenario stadium in San Juan yesterday when they beat Racing Club 2-1 in the final.

Uruguayan Santiago Silva put Julio César Falcioni’s side ahead in the 21st minute and forward Lucas Viatri doubled the difference in the 62nd. Valentín Viola, who played his last match with the club of Avellaneda as he was transferred to the Sporting Lisbon of Portugal, discounted for Racing in the 68th. Midfielder Cristian Chávez had a clear chance to seal the victory for Boca in the 75th, but his shot was cleared by defender Matías Cahais.

Boca clinched a spot in the next South American Cup for winning the competition.

To play in the final, Boca eliminated Santamarina of Tandil, Central Córdoba of Rosario, Olimpo, Rosario Central and Deportivo Merlo. Meanwhile, Racing beat El Porvenir, Patronato of Paraná, Sarmiento of Resistencia, Atlético Tucumán and River Plate.

Both teams had a poor start in the Initial Tournament last weekend. Boca showed a disappointing performance in their 3-0 defeat at Quilmes, while Racing missed two penalties in their 1-1 home draw with Atlético Rafaela.
