Doctors warn that Buonanotte's pulmonary condition may worsen

River Plate's forward Diego Buonanotte.

Doctors warned that Buonanotte's pulmonary condition can worsen as the River Plate's forward is being treated at Los Arcos Clinic in Palermo neighbourhood, where he was transfered after suffering a severe car accident on Route 65 in Santa Fe Province when he was heading towards Teodelina village, where the athlete is originally from, on his father's car. Buonanotte was travelling along with three close friends who died on the way to a hospital.

Authorities informed that Buonanotte's car hit against a tree sided along the route around 6.45am under heavy showers, and that it could have stroken against a small hill aside the road to then hit a huge tree, as Buonanotte's friends were thrown from the vehicle due to the dimension of the impact.

Doctor Eduardo Allegrini reported that River Plate’s forward is “stable and his vital functions were not compromised at the moment.” Nevertheless, doctors said that they are worried about the pulmonary contusion Buonanotte suffered because it could generate a complication.

The doctors announced during the last medical report that they can not confirm yet if he is out of danger, that is why they will have to wait 48 hours until they have a “clear report.”

The head of River’s medical board Héctor Cavalieri announced that he “still doesn’t know his friends died” in the accident and he will probably need “psychiatric help” once he is is notified about this situation.

He added that “we are worried about his evolution and we’ll have to be on the alert on his pulmonary contusion.”

The player has been hospitalized at the San Martín de Venado Tuerto clinic, where remained at the Intensive Cares department, and has been transfered to Los Arcos Hospital located in Palermo neighbourhood in Buenos Aires City.

While he was hospitalized in Venado Tuerto’s hospital, the new president of River Plate Daniel Passarella visited him and told reporters that “he recognized me, he was estable and conscious.“ Passarella added that he and the doctors arranged the transfer of the player to Los Arcos hospital.

A fire-fighter that was part of the rescue and the first aids supplied to accident victims told reportes that River Plate's player was aside the car fully conscious as Buonanotte told them "I simply lost control of the car and hit a tree", and also expressed that he was driving under heavy showers.

According to sources Buonanotte and his friends were returning from neighbour town of Arribeños, where the four had allegedly spent the night at a discotheque.

First reports indicate that River Plate's player entered the emergency room with a broken humerus, collar bone, a pulmonary contusion as well multiple injuries.

Buonanotte was driving a Peugeot 307 and authorities are now trying to determine if there was a second vehicle involved.
